MAKING CANDLES
Melting the wax is the most critical safety issue!
Never melt wax on direct heat.
Turkey roasters do an excellent job in melting wax or use a double boiler.
Double boiler- use a large pot, add a few inches of water, bring to a boil, then turn down heat. Boiling may splash water into wax and this is dangerous.
Break up wax with a hammer and chisell and put it in a second (old) pot that fits inside the first. Place pot in hot water bath and allow to melt. Add "the pill" - one for each slab of wax. Add color if desired. When melted add the scent. (Start with 1/2 ounce of scent per pound of wax - you can add more if desired but most crafters find that this is enough scent)
Allow to heat until the scent is dissolved. Then you are ready to pour. Reserve about 20% of the mixture to cover the re-pour. Have jars or molds prepared ahead:
Make wicks by feeding thru tab to desired length, crimp tab to wick snugly.
Wick sizing: FOR PARRAFIN CANDLES ONLY (SOY WAX REQUIRES LARGER WICKS THA PARRAFIN WAX)
Tea lights - use our pretabbed wicks only.
Extra small - votives and floaters using tart molds.
Small - for the 4oz.,8oz.and 12oz.jars.
Medium - for the pints and quarts.
Large - for 4-5 inch diameter candles
Extra large for 5-6 inch diameter candles.
SOY CANDLES MUST USE SOECIAL WICKS FOR SOY - THESE ARE ONLY AVAILABLE IN PRE-MADE FOR SMALL OR LARGE(MED) JARS.
For multiple wicks. Take an 8oz. jar, if 3 of these fill your bowl use 3 small wicks. If 4 fill it use 4 small wicks. Always remember to downsize wicks when adding extra wicks. Never use 4 medium wicks if the project calls for one!
I like to glue my wicks into the bottom of the jars using a hot glue gun. For votives add the wicks after you fill the molds with wax.
A pour pot filled with wax will yield 12- 8oz jars or 6 pints or 3 quarts.
Fill the jars or molds with the wax you prepared per above instructions. Add wax to desired level in jar and allow to cool. As wax hardens keep pulling wick over to the center of the jar. The wax will shrink right down the center. It is supposed to do this. Do not try to stop this shrink. We allow our candles to cool overnight. The next morning, we melt the saved wax and fill the sink hole. When cooled, trim wicks and candles are done. If making votives, they should release when cool, if they stick place in refridgerator for 10 minutes(Not Freezer) they should pop right out.
